The History Behind Women’s Fashions
The fashion choices of today’s modern woman are as plentiful as the sands of the sea. Pants, shorts, dresses, vests, sweaters, jackets, leggings, and skirts are seen in every colour, length and fabric imaginable. No type of clothing or lack thereof is considered off limits. For centuries society has argued about women’s clothing. Everything from the cut of a blouse, to the length of women’s shorts has been debated. The evolution of fashion has helped women to ignore the opinions of society and wear whatever makes them feel comfortable in their own skin.
Fashion has changed drastically over the last couple of centuries. In the early 1900′s women were still wearing corsets and long skirts with bustles. But as early as 1930, men and women were seen wearing shorts for athletic activities. This was a major step away from a few decades earlier when a woman showing her legs in public was not socially acceptable. The widespread popularity of motion pictures, two World Wars, and The Women’s Liberation Movement, altered women’s fashion forever. During both World Wars, fashion flip flopped between conservative dress and more casual attire. Many women feared the wars were punishment from God for deviation from “modest dress” and traditional roles as mother’s and housewives. Others couldn’t afford the high cost of fabric which was being rationed for military uniforms.
After World War II, the public’s fear subsided and fashion began to move forward again. In 1949, Emilio Pucci di Barsento, an Italian designer, began selling form fitting shorts that ended just below the knee in his boutique in Capri, Italy. This new style of shorts was aptly named “Capri pants.” His design rose in popularity when celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe were photographed wearing them. With the success of Capri pants, the length of women’s shorts began to rise. Welsh designer and British fashion icon, Mary Quant started the “London Look” in the early 1960′s. This look included such trends as baby doll dresses and the ever so scandalous “Hot pants” that boasted a mere 2 inch long inseam. Women in the 1970′s touted “Daisy Dukes,” similar in length to hot pants, but made from cutting off the legs of jeans and leaving them to fray. The term “Daisy Dukes” came from Catherine Bach’s character in the popular American television series; Dukes of Hazzard.
Now in the twenty first century, all fabrics, styles, lengths, and colours of women’s shorts are considered appropriate. Women’s fashion has evolved until it has developed a life of its own. Gone are the days of one particular style spanning centuries or decades. Modern fashion embraces every trend, and every woman embodies her own unique brand.
